“Emotionally attached” – Senior Citizen home selling tips – - part six

Portage and Kalamazoo MI Senior Real Estate-   In our last article we talked about senior citizens that express resistance to a housing change when living in their house presents too many challenges.

In this article we will explore another very real barrier which keeps some senior citizens from making housing decisions that will be the most beneficial for them.  Making a housing change can be completely overwhelming!

The emotional attachment to the home is one thing….but the shere reality of sorting and getting rid of years of accumulation and memories is daunting just to think about.

So, how do senior citizens get help in clearing out their home before selling?  Here are some ways to get help!

  1. Seniors who are going to be moving into Friendship Village have the benefit of a professional organizer and a professional stager which is hired for and paid by Friendship Village.  Often a professional organizer can get lots done in much less time.  A senior professional organizer can often do some of the first sorting and organizing which makes the task much more manageable.  A senior professional organizer may be able to help the seniors decide what furniture and household items need to be moved with them, which might be offered to children and which should be sold or given away.  The sorting process is one of the first important steps.
  2. Once it is determined what items need to move with the seniors, then it may be a good idea to check with family and close friends to see if there are some items that might be given away.
  3. I have heard of many different ways that families have given away items.  Here are a few ways that seem to have lots of merit (and can avoid potential conflict).
—-Give the children (and grandchildren?) a certain amount of monopoly money and hold an “auction” for the items.  In this manner, people can choose to spend their money on items that are most valuable to them.
—Friends of our have allowed their children to “tag” furniture pieces with masking tape over the years.  As a child or grandchild expresses interest in a furniture piece, they are allowed to “label” it, thus claiming it when it is no longer needed by the seniors.
—Perhaps the “tagging” of furniture as described above could be something that a parent or grandparent does as part of a Christmas celebration.  Perhaps on Christmas, or over the course of several Christmases, family members might be given the opportunity to “tag” one item that they would like to inherit.
—Some families put as many numbers in a hat as there are desired items to be given away.  Each person in line for inheriting is able to pick 1 or 3 or 6 numbers (whatever the number divided by the number of people).  Once everyone has drawn their numbers, the person who drew number 1 gets first pick, 2 gets second pick and so forth.  This is a totally random manner of allowing people to choose what they would like without some of the typical conflicts.
  4. When family members do not have a need for any of the items which will not be needed by the seniors, there are some great ways to bless others who are needy or are raising money for great causes.  (In Kalamazoo those options include the Kalamazoo Deacon’s Conference, Second Impressions, Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, Goodwill, Nuway Thrift Shop, Salvation Army, St Vincent De Paul, YWCA, Love In the Name of Christ, Area Churches and more. We will devote a post sometime soon to explaining how some of these places bless others with the items.)
  5. There is a great opportunity for the Church to extend its love for senior citizens too!   I don’t currently know of any churches that have a “specific program” that helps seniors transition from one living situation to another, but I know that many churches respond to individual needs.  If a senior does not have family in the area or has special needs, there is a great opportunity for the church to step in with a group of people to assist.  This can also be a great outreach for a church to offer to families in the neighborhood.
  6. The Veenstra Team partners with some local businesses that help senior citizens work through this process as well.  Give us a call if you would like to be connected to these businesses.  One of the companies is available on an “on call” and “as needed” basis and is very reasonably priced.

Portage and Kalamazoo senior citizens,  we hope this article helps you recognize that you are not alone, the task does not need to be so daunting, and sharing the household items that you will no longer need can be a real blessing to others!

“Emotionally attached” – Senior Citizen home selling tips – - part five

Kalamazoo MI Senior Real Estate – Growing older obviously brings many changes and challenges. Many of the biggest changes revolve around the challenges of maintaining a house.  Often the senior citizen and his/her family recognize that it will be necessary to sell the house and move to a living situation that will present fewer challenges. Interestingly, senior citizen housing and assisted living providers find that senior citizens often use their house, (which may be one of the biggest challenges to the senior citizen) as the excuse NOT to move to the senior center.  One of the directors of a local senior residence notes that senior citizens may fear that moving from a house that has been home for many years to a senior living facility signals less freedom or more limitations.  In actuality, according to her, moving to a place that has been designed and equiped for senior citizens often makes living even more enjoyable and increases freedom and friendships.  She commented that the need to sell the house happens to be one of the most convenient excuses to stall their major housing change decision.  She notes that the senior citizen or their adult children may have the perception (or use the excuse) that they won’t be able to sell their home in the current real estate market.  The current real estate market does have some unique challenges, but it also has some great opportunities!  Interest rates are near their all time lows and this brings MORE buyers into the market.  Houses ARE still selling in today’s market.  The Veenstra Team has adjusted their marketing strategies to take advantage of the great opportunities.  We are ready to help a senior citizen understand and work through the entire home selling process.  With the professional services of the Veenstra Team, senior citizens in Kalamazoo have a great option for getting their home sold.  Kalamazoo also has great senior living alternatives.  A living situation that supports a senior citizen can lead to a longer, happier life with increased opportunities!   Remember that the Veenstra Team offers completely free consultations with no obligations.  We will give you professional advice about your home sale prospects.  This will give you the information you need to make the best choices for your future!  We are eager to help you!

“Emotionally attached” – Senior Citizen home selling tips – part four

Portage MI Senior Real Estate – Is it time for your elderly parents to leave their long time home?  This is certainly an emotional time, and there are lots of memories wrapped up in the house….so document some of those memories!  Take a video camera into the house and start shooting.  If it seems appropriate, have the elderly senior walk through the house and share memories.  If that would seem to be too painful, then grab a family member or neighbor or two and have them go through the house sharing favorite memories.    Watching the video after the move will hopefully stir great memories and bring lots of reasons for Thanksgiving.  Thanks for reading!

“Emotionally attached” – Senior Citizen home selling tips – - Part three

Portage MI Senior Real Estate – One of the challenges of leaving a home that you have living in for many years is the impending sense of “loss” that you may feel.  If you are a senior citizen who is selling a home, or if you are a child of an elderly parent that is transitioning to a new living option you need to intentionally focus on what you HAVE and WILL HAVE instead of what you are leaving!   Focus on what you will be GAINING instead of what you may feel like you are loosing or leaving.

Though your current home “feels comfortable”, it is probably a place where, if you are honest with yourself, you realize that you are often lonely.  Almost all senior living options include much better options for being social again.  That is something to celebrate!

Almost all Senior living options include minimal need for upkeep.  Since our mobility often becomes more limited as we age, we need to celebrate the fact that we will not have to try to maintain a home that can be overwhelming.  Celebrate the fact that moving out of your house will make you much less dependant on your adult children and neighbors to live.  So,  even though you may, at first, think that you are losing your independance through your move, you can really look at it as a GAIN of independance — since you will not need to rely on adult children or neighbors.  Celebrate that!

In one of our future posts we will focus on changing your daily schedule as you change your living situation.  You won’t need to be cleaning and maintaining your house, SO that leaves lots of opportunities.  Watch for that post!  It will be coming soon.

“Emotionally attached” – Senior Citizen home selling tips – Part two

Kalamazoo MI Senior Real Estate – In our last blog post we talked about the emotional attachment that is bound to come after living in a house for many years and we suggested one fun way for children of elderly adults or grandchildren of elderly adults can help create some lasting memories while sorting and packing. Today, I will give you another idea that your family can use to help the elderly adult in your family remember the wonderful blessing that the house was, without mourning the loss of it when in a new environment.  Have each of the family members in your house create a page for a book that you can create and give to your elderly parents or grandparents moving to a senior retirement center or assisted living facility.   Click here for a link to a page that you can send to everyone.  Have them either write a story, attach some pictures,  draw a picture or …..

I would suggest that you WAIT until AFTER the move to give this book to your aging parents or grandparents so that it can be a CELEBRATION of the house instead of a REASON not to leave!  With most senior citizens there comes a time when living in their current house is either not safe or is not possible given physical limitations.  Having a book of written memories from family members and friends will be a way for the senior citizens (AND the children and grandparents who may also be struggling with the change of not having Mom or Dad and/or Grandma or Grandpa in the same house) to celebrate and remember the many blessings of the people and places which are a part of their legacy.

“Emotionally Attached” – Senior Citizen Home Selling Tips – Part One

Kalamazoo MI Senior Real Estate – Many senior citizens have lived in their house for 20 30, 40 or even 50 years!  How can you NOT be emotionally attached?  What a challenge then to consider moving into a new senior retirement center, or assisted living facillity.  There is not only the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the tasks ahead, there can also often be a sense of loss.  That feeling of loss is not just related to leaving a house that has been home for so long, but it is also a loss of the sense of independance.   So what are some practical ways to deal with the challenges?  Here is one idea to preserve the memories of the home that they are leaving.

Have one of the kids or grandkids come and take pictures and pictures and more pictures……or actually, have more than one person come with cameras and have a fun time sorting and “playing” and “photographing!”   When you are going through and sorting possessions, memories are bound to pop up.  Be ready to capture the memories through photos and with an audio or video recorder.    Yep, you guessed it….there will be tears and laughter, highs and lows……BUT you will also be able to learn and love and celebrate the legacy of living in that house…  As a moving-in present at the new house, create a photo book of all the pictures that you took during those sorting and packing days.  Perhaps retell some of the stories in the book that were remembered that day.  The book will be a cherished key and lasting legacy of the lives lived in that home.

This is obviously not the quick way to get the sorting and packing done, but rest assured, it will be one of your favorite memories of the loved ones who lived in that house.

Older voters could decide election according to the Seattle Times Newspaper

Elections are coming up soon.  Kalamazoo Senior Citizens and Senior Citizens from all across the nation will likely have a significant impact on the upcoming election.  Senior citizens are the most conscientious of voters.  Read a few of the statistics compiled by the Seattle Times Newspaper.

The 2008 general election drew 91 percent of Washington voters age 65 and older, compared with 68 percent of voters younger than 25. The gap was even wider in that year’s primary, which drew 72 percent of senior voters and 18 percent of those younger than 25.

Midterm elections, such as this year’s, typically draw fewer voters than a presidential election, magnifying the effect of the senior vote.

That could prove worrisome for Democrats, considering that Barack Obama won the White House in 2008 with the support of 66 percent of voters younger than 30, but only 45 percent of those 65 and older, according to Edison Research, which conducts exit polls for national news networks.

A different litmus test

Janice Workman, of Auburn, says she looks not just at a politician’s stands on issues, but how he or she comes across as a person and as a leader.

“I hate mudslinging, so I’m not likely not to vote for somebody who has dirty ads,” said Workman, 72.

She says deficit spending and the wars are the top issues for her. “I have a grandson who’s in the Marines, and that’s worrisome. … He’s on a supply ship, so I never know where he’s at,” she said.

In this year’s Senate race, she says she’s intrigued by Republican Clint Didier’s call for people to take more responsibility for their situation, not rely so much on government.

“If I think he’s for real, he could very easily get my vote,” she said. But if Didier loses to Rossi in the primary, Workman says, she’ll likely hop across the political fence and vote for Murray, simply because Rossi doesn’t inspire her.

The idea that a voter could go from a tea-party conservative in the primary to a liberal Democrat in the general election may not follow a script political analysts would write, but it goes with the territory among these voters in this independent-minded district.

It is almost enrollment time for Medicare Part D or Advantage plan.

The Veenstra Team specializes in helping senior citizens with the Kalamazoo real estate needs, but we recognize that, in order to best serve our senior citizen clients, we should also be aware of other areas of concern and interest to senior citizens.  This morning, in our reading about senior citizens, we discovered the following article by Lauren Young, the personal finance editor at Thomson Reuters.  She oversees personal finance coverage for Reuters.com and other Thomson Reuters platforms.  Her article about Medicare and Medicare premiums seemed worth sharing with our blog readers!
“The mailboxes of senior citizens fill up this time of year with an avalanche of direct mail pitches for Medicare D prescription drug plans and Advantage managed care networks.
With dozens of plans available in most parts of the country, the fall annual enrollment periodcan be a complex chore for Medicare beneficiaries — and sometimes for adult children helping out elderly parents with money matters. Annual enrollment runs from November 15 to December 31, which often leads to an end-of-year rush that collides with the holidays.
It’s not mandatory for seniors to buy either a Medicare D or Advantage plan. Only 25 percent of Medicare beneficiaries opt for Advantage; the rest use traditional Medicare’s fee-for-service system. But prescription drug coverage makes sense for anyone with significant expenses.
And this much is clear: enrollees in either Medicare D or Advantage need to shop the market every year. Insurance companies often change their offerings from year to year in ways that can boost premiums by thousands of dollars, or make it difficult to get certain drugs. And, the health needs of patients change from year to year.
Medicare D. Some prescription drug plans will be eliminated as new federal policy pushes insurers to offer only plans…..(CLICK THE LINK below to read more information about Medicare D Premiums, Medicare Advantage, enrollment plans,  shopping around for best prices and more.)

Social Security seems destined for a zero cost of living increase again this year.

According to an article in the New York Times “Senior citizens who depend on Social Security may go a second year without a raise.
It would be just the second year without an increase since 1975, when Congress first adopted cost of living adjustments (COLA).The bad news is expected to be made official Friday, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases inflation estimates for September, The Associated Press reported yesterday.
Raises are based on the Consumer Price Index and not set by Congress.”
If this news causes you the need to reconsider your Kalamazoo housing options, or if you would like to have a free home market analysis to understand the value of your Kalamazoo real estate, the Veenstra Team is happy to provide you free real estate consultations.  Our home buyer services are always free of charge and our home marketing services are extremely comprehensive.  We enjoy working with senior citizens and/or their adult children.

The Golden Years….

Here is an article that we thought many of you would relate to or would want those who care for you, to read. It was published in The Banner, October 2010.

The Not-So-Golden Years by Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

They call it aging, but that is not an accurate word for growing old.

Aging is a universal thing. It’s what everybody does every day. Between birth and our eighteenth birthdays aging is called “growing up,” and I remember that we could not wait to do it, always acting as if we were older than we were. Aging simply means going through the life cycle: baby, infant, child, youth, adolescent, young adult, adult, middle age (here titles become tricky), mature adult, senior. Among old people we may still distinguish “young old” (65-74), “middle old” (75-84), and “oldest old” (85+). In this season we experience aging as a corrosion of our present form of existence.

I am on the border of middle old and oldest old. I live independently in a resident home for seniors. Assisted living is the next step down (or up). For those of us in this time of life, aging is an occupation. There are programs in which we are urged to participate because they will help us “age successfully.” Thus far I have avoided them. These programs are wisely…..

Innovative Ohio Program where Senior Citizens Join in Crime Fighting

Is this a good idea for Kalamazoo Senior Citizens and Portage Senior Citizens?   Senior citizens in Fairfield County, OH are being asked to join law enforcement in a new program intended to prevent crimes against the elderly and help solve crimes quicker. Local police and the sheriff, elder-protection workers and senior citizens announced the Triad program . It is part of a nationwide effort to connect police departments and sheriff’s offices with the elderly in crime prevention and crime-solving. The idea is to get law enforcement and the elderly together regularly to discuss topics such as home-repair scams, telemarketer fraud and other financial exploitation, burglaries and elder abuse. “Money’s tight; Triad doesn’t cost anything,” said Dale Gillette, a retired Ross County deputy sheriff who helped organize the program there and now works as Triad coordinator for Attorney General Richard Cordray.“It is just bringing seniors and law enforcement together,” Gillette said.  The program will advise the elderly on precautions to take. For example, Gillette said, an elderly homeowner should be suspicious if approached by strangers who offer to trim trees or pave the driveway. The homeowner should decline and call the local police or sheriff to report the solicitation. That way, authorities will know a possible scam artist is on the prowl, Gillette said.   To read the rest of the story…..click this link  Seniors to join in crime fighting.

Get Help Paying for Home Energy Upgrades for your Kalamazoo homes

Energy Upgrades merit Tax Credits

Selling in the next year or so? Call the Veenstra Team BEFORE you over improve your house.

If you are considering any upgrades to make your home more energy efficient, NOW is a great time to make that decision!  You can earn a federal energy tax credit worth up to $1,500,  by making eligible home improvements to your principal residence. Projects that can qualify include upgrading your air-conditioner, furnace, water heater, roof or insulation.

Here are the main details of the tax credit.   First, only 30 percent of the cost counts toward the tax credit, which maxes out at $1,500. Second, the tax credit is what the Internal Revenue Service calls “nonrefundable,” meaning you can’t claim more in credits than the total you owe in federal taxes. If you don’t file, then you’re out of luck. Third, this particular tax credit is scheduled to expire at the end of 2010, so make sure you get the work done by Dec. 31. A separate tax credit for big alternative-energy projects, such as solar panels and geothermal heat pumps, runs through 2016.

THere are a number of different rebates that you can take advantage of.  You can find out about appliance rebates (that vary by state).  THere is also an entire Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Energy.

In addition, there are some assistance programs for low income families which will help needy families go green!

If you are going to be selling your home in the near future, it is always wise to invite the Veenstra Team over to make sure that you are not “over improving” your home.  We are happy to come to your house and give you some professional real estate advice about what improvements will be a good return on your investment.  You can call the Veenstra Team at 269-350-5514.

An Idea for the Church’s Role of Caring for Senior Citizens

A friend posted a link to this blog post on Facebook yesterday and I thought that it was a good post to share with our Kalamazoo Senior Living and Kalamazoo Real Estate blog readers. It is by Pastor Brian Croft, who according to his blog, is Senior Pastor of Auburndale Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
Many senior citizens are active in the life of the local church and contribute hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to the church and local communities. When senior citizens need care themselves, sometimes it is challenging for the church to figure out the best way to care for senior citizens in the church. The blog post that is linked below focuses on one group of members in the church that can really be an asset for caring for senior citizens in the church. So what group of members are we talking about? Well, let me give you a hint….it is the group of stay at home Moms! Read the blog post that we have linked below and feel free to comment about your thoughts!  HERE IS THE LINK TO THE BLOG POST.
